The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing local government leadership crisis in the state.

The appeal was made by the PDP State Chairman, Sunday Bisi, during a meeting of the League of Veteran Journalists held on Wednesday in Osogbo.

Bisi clarified that the Court of Appeal ruling delivered in Akure on February 10 did not reinstate the sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) local government chairmen and councillors, as claimed by the APC.

The opposition party continues to push for the reinstatement of its officials, citing their victory in the 2022 local government elections.

Amid growing tensions, both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) instructed workers to halt operations from February 17 due to security concerns stemming from the political standoff.

The situation further escalated after the Court of Appeal on June 13 dismissed an APC application seeking to relist a previously struck-out appeal. The appeal had been removed from the docket on January 13 for lack of diligent prosecution.

The Osun State government interpreted the court’s decision as an endorsement of an earlier Federal High Court judgment that nullified the tenure of the 2022-elected APC council officials.

Despite this, the APC maintains that the court did not invalidate the original elections and insists its officials remain the rightful officeholders.

Bisi, however, reaffirmed the legitimacy of the PDP local government officials elected on February 22 and accused the APC of disregarding judicial authority. He warned that continued defiance of court rulings could plunge the state into chaos.

“We have submitted certified copies of the court judgments to all relevant authorities and are awaiting full compliance,” Bisi said.

“We will continue to pursue justice through lawful means and will resist any attempt by the opposition to impose a state of emergency on Osun.”
