Residents of Umunobo, Nkwu-Emeke, and Akalovu communities in Emekuku, located in the Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, have expressed deep concern following sightings of masked herdsmen in their area.

Despite the panic among locals, the Imo State Police Command has assured the public that there is no need for fear, stating that security forces have been mobilized to maintain peace and protect lives and property.

During a visit by PUNCH Metro on Thursday, a resident who wished to remain anonymous reported that eight masked individuals, suspected to be herdsmen, were seen emerging from the surrounding bushes and heading toward the village early Wednesday morning.

According to the source, the community had previously clashed with herders over the destruction of their farmlands by wandering cattle. Although tensions initially subsided, the unexpected appearance of armed, masked men carrying AK-47 rifles sparked widespread alarm and chaos among villagers.

Responding to inquiries, Imo State Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed that the incident was on the command’s radar.

Okoye said, “The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had immediately deployed the DPOs of Owerri Urban, New Owerri, Owerri North divisions to the place to guard against any attack.

“Furthermore, he immediately deployed men from the Special Intervention Squad of security operatives in synergy with Nigeria Army operatives to patrol the area.

“There is no cause for alarm as the situation is under control. We have an adequate security presence. We appeal to the people to go about their lawful business, as their safety is guaranteed,” Okoye said.
