Patience Jonathan, the wife of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology, Guidance, and Counselling by Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
The announcement was made in a statement by her media adviser, Chris Okeke, on Sunday. The degree was conferred during the university’s 43rd Postgraduate Convocation Ceremony held on Saturday.
Speaking at the event, the former First Lady emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and urged Nigerians, particularly women and young people, to continue pursuing education regardless of age.
“No age is too late to achieve your academic dreams, whether you are young or old,” she said. “If I can do it, you can too. Even in retirement, it is never too late to return to school. Education is a powerful tool that keeps the mind active and opens the door to new knowledge.”
She dedicated her academic achievement to Nigerian women, reaffirming her commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of women, children, and young people. Jonathan pledged to continue working toward their empowerment and to promote dialogue that fosters social development.
Reflecting on her journey, she credited divine grace and the unwavering support of her family for helping her reach this milestone.
“I am deeply grateful to the Almighty God who made this day possible,” she said. “I also sincerely thank my family, especially my dear husband, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his support and invaluable advice. I appreciate my wonderful children for their understanding and love, and I’m thankful to my friends for their constant encouragement. Today is truly a joyful day for me.”
