British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been offered Ghanaian citizenship and a continental ambassadorship by President John Mahama during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House in Accra.
The offer came as part of Joshua’s involvement in the Legacy RISE Sports: Battle of the Beasts event, which brought him to Ghana on June 13.
The boxing icon was welcomed by key figures including Ghanaian legend Azumah Nelson, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and Sharaf Mahama, CEO of Legacy RISE Sports.
Recognizing Joshua’s global stature and African roots, President Mahama expressed admiration for the boxer’s impact and invited him to take on a more formal role in inspiring young Africans through sport.
“If you want us to give you a Ghanaian passport, we will give you. You are an icon very much loved in Ghana,” said Mahama.
He continued “we want him to be our ambassador. Africa needs people like him to help inspire the youth and change lives through sports.”
Joshua’s visit has included training sessions, community outreach, and public engagements. Speaking with warmth and humor, he touched on the playful rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.
“Coming to Ghana wasn’t originally on my agenda. In Nigeria, there’s this mindset that Nigeria is above Ghana. But now that I’m here, I see I’ve been lied to,” he joked, drawing laughter from the audience.
Joshua went on to express admiration for the country “your country is beautiful. I’m impressed by the culture, hospitality, and organisation. I can’t wait to tell the world how amazing Ghana is.”
His remarks and presence have resonated widely, reinforcing the powerful link between sport, identity, and African unity.
