The Social Democratic Party has removed its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, from office over allegations of financial misconduct and misuse of party finances.

Alongside Gabam, the party has also relieved its National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu, of their duties.

This action was disclosed in a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba.

“The suspended officials were linked to a series of unauthorised financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and diversion of funds without NWC approval,” the statement read.

Aiyenigba noted that Gabam had presented an unauthorised financial statement to INEC and made its summary public through newspaper publications, which prompted the party to inform the relevant security agencies.

“This action reinforces our zero-tolerance stance on corruption,” he stated.

To enable a detailed probe, the party has constituted a temporary committee to examine all financial records and propose suitable disciplinary actions or legal remedies.

In accordance with the party’s constitution, the Deputy National Chairman (North), Sadiq Abubakar, has been designated as the Acting National Chairman.

The party alleged that the misused funds total several hundreds of millions of naira, including revenue generated from the sale of nomination forms and donations ahead of the 2023 elections.

The statement added that the suspension takes effect immediately and that INEC and other relevant authorities have been officially informed.
