Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has cautioned party members against actions that could damage the party’s unity and credibility. He urged stakeholders to place the collective interest of the PDP above personal grievances.
Damagum issued the warning on Monday during his opening remarks at the party’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja. The high-level gathering brought together governors, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), and representatives from key party organs to address internal challenges and shape the PDP’s strategic direction.
In his address, Damagum stressed the need for discipline, loyalty, and unity within the party, particularly in light of recent internal frictions.
“If you truly love this party, now is the time to promote its strengths rather than weaken it. Unless you’re among those hired to destroy the party and if so, let me say clearly: enough is enough,” he declared.
He acknowledged that a recent divisive issue had sparked internal unrest, resulting in what he described as a “painful decision.” While he declined to elaborate, he assured members that the matter had been fully discussed and would be addressed at the appropriate time.
“The issue that recently caused tension among us has been thoroughly deliberated and a decision taken. It was not easy, but we will speak more on it when the time is right,” he said.
Addressing reports that the gathering was an informal caucus, Damagum clarified that the meeting was a constitutionally recognized NEC session, convened after consultations with governors and key stakeholders, and focused on compliance with party regulations.
“This is a formal NEC meeting, not an extended caucus. Our objective is to ensure regulatory compliance and avoid unnecessary complications,” he explained.
Damagum also warned members against conduct that could harm the party’s public image and accused external forces of attempting to sabotage the PDP.
“I urge all members to stop arbitrarily demarketing our party. Our strength lies in our ability to resolve our issues internally, in our own unique way,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the party’s integrity and cohesion, promising that resolutions from the NEC meeting would be shared with the media shortly after its conclusion.
