Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his role in reconciling the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

The two Rivers leaders, embroiled in a long-running political crisis that culminated in Fubara’s suspension and a declared state of emergency in the state, met with President Tinubu in Abuja on Thursday. The high-level meeting marked a significant step towards peace, with official photographs showing Tinubu, Wike, and Fubara smiling after the discussions.

Reacting to the development, Sowunmi despite his known alignment with Tinubu’s political rival, Atiku Abubakar praised the President for his decisive intervention. In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, he described the move as a demonstration of true leadership.

“This is how to lead! A leader must resolve issues, not escalate them,” Sowunmi wrote. “There is nothing wrong with studying Asiwaju @officialABAT. After all, we learn from leaders in other parts of the world. It is a colonial mindset to think we can’t learn from one of our own. Mr. President, you’ve done well on this one.”

He also expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara, Minister Wike, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and the elders of the state who played a part in encouraging the peace process.

“Thank you, @SimFubaraKSC. Thank you, @GovWike. Thank you, Speaker and your colleagues. Thank you to the reasonable elders who made this happen. This has always been my position: the journey back home is the same as the journey away. Team Rivers is back. Let’s celebrate. Never again!” he added.
