Three individuals have been apprehended in Ghana in connection with the theft and illegal trafficking of vehicles stolen from Nigeria. Their arrest in Accra was carried out by officials from the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL), following a joint operation between INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Abuja and their Ghanaian counterparts.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.
He revealed that a Toyota Prado (2020 model), which was taken during a robbery involving a Federal Government agency in Abuja, had been found in the suspects’ possession and was subsequently returned to Nigeria.
“The three suspects arrested in Ghana have been charged to court in Accra. The vehicle was successfully returned to Nigeria and formally handed over to the concerned agency,” the statement partly reads.
In a separate case, Adejobi also reported that INTERPOL NCB Abuja had recovered a 2018 Toyota Hilux that was stolen from an employee of a different Federal Government agency in Abuja’s Utako area on October 18, 2024. Through in-depth investigation and collaboration with INTERPOL NCB Niamey, the vehicle was traced to Agadez, Niger Republic, and intercepted near the Nigeria-Niger border before being returned to its rightful owner.
Further investigations are ongoing to retrieve two additional stolen vehicles — a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV — which were reportedly taken in May 2025 and believed to have been sold in Niger Republic.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the INTERPOL units for their diligent work and emphasized his administration’s dedication to combating cross-border criminal activity and enhancing international police cooperation.
He also encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of police electronic registration systems for vehicles to support swift recovery in cases of theft.
