As part of activities commemorating this year’s Democracy Day, President Bola Tinubu on Thursday announced national honours for a wide array of distinguished Nigerians including both living and posthumous recipients.

The announcement was made during the President’s State of the Nation address at a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja.

Among the honorees is the late Kudirat Abiola, who was posthumously awarded the title of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR). Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, was conferred with one of the country’s highest honours, Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

Also honoured posthumously were Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and other members of the Ogoni Nine, in recognition of their roles in Nigeria’s democratic and human rights struggles.

In addition to the national honours, President Tinubu announced presidential pardons for the awardees, noting that, “I shall also be exercising my powers under the prerogative of mercy to grant these national heroes a full pardon, together with others whose names shall be announced later in conjunction with the National Council of State.”
