Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has delivered a scathing assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming that the President is widely unpopular and has failed in key areas of governance.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Monday, El-Rufai stated that recent polling conducted by his team shows President Tinubu with a 91% disapproval rating in the North and Southeast regions. He also claimed that even in Tinubu’s stronghold of Lagos, his disapproval rating stands at 78%.
“In the last two years, Tinubu has performed poorly in security, economic management, and trade,” El-Rufai said. “We must ask Nigerians, has your life improved since May 29, 2023? If not, why not consider a different direction?”
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain emphasized that discontent with the current administration is widespread, even in the Southwest where Tinubu has traditionally enjoyed strong support.
“While he performs slightly better in states like Ondo and Ekiti, there is no region where his approval rating exceeds 50%,” El-Rufai added. “The economic machinery has stalled, the security structure is ineffective, and there is no coherent trade or investment strategy. Everything seems to be deteriorating.”
He further criticized the federal government’s handling of public finances, stating: “Revenue generation has increased, but there is no transparency or visible impact. Nigerians are asking where is the money going?”
El-Rufai’s remarks come amid growing public dissatisfaction with economic hardship, rising insecurity, and stalled reforms under the Tinubu administration.
