The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed it is actively working to bring former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi back into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing him as a “valuable political asset.”

Speaking on Arise News on Thursday, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi emphasized the party’s desire for Obi’s return, citing his broad appeal and political influence.

“Peter Obi is a product of the PDP, and we definitely want him back. He carries significant political weight, and any party with him stands to gain tremendously,” Abdullahi said.

He noted that despite claims of electoral irregularities in the 2023 presidential election, Obi who had defected to the Labour Party (LP) shortly before the polls garnered over six million votes and won in 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“Even with the challenges of electoral malpractice, Obi’s performance reflects his deep political value,” Abdullahi added.

Obi, who ran as the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, was previously the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before parting ways with the party. Though he remains a member of the LP, he has expressed openness to working with the coalition being formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Meanwhile, PDP’s two-time presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar recently announced his departure from the party a move viewed as part of a broader opposition realignment aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 through a consolidated front.

The PDP’s renewed outreach to Obi highlights the strategic positioning and evolving alliances already shaping the political landscape in the lead-up to Nigeria’s next presidential election.
