The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized recent comments by Nentawe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting that there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock” come 2027.
Yilwatda made the statement on Tuesday while addressing APC members at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, suggesting that President Bola Tinubu would retain his position beyond the next general election.
In response, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi described the remarks as “arrogant” and insensitive to the prevailing hardships faced by Nigerians. He emphasized that the presidency is not a hereditary seat but a democratic mandate that must be earned and renewed through performance.
“The APC chairman’s declaration is both presumptuous and disrespectful to millions of Nigerians battling hunger, insecurity, and unemployment,” Abdullahi said in a statement on Wednesday.
He warned that such a stance raises concerns about the APC’s commitment to democratic principles and respect for the will of the people.
“No matter how the ruling party chooses to spin the narrative, there will be a vacancy in Aso Rock in 2027,” Abdullahi said. “President Tinubu must reapply to Nigerians and justify why he deserves a second term, especially after policies that have worsened living conditions for the majority.”
The ADC spokesman further criticized the APC for self-congratulatory rhetoric, noting that despite government claims of progress, inflation continues to rise, insecurity persists, and the naira remains weak.
“Proclaiming ‘no vacancy’ two years ahead of an election mocks the sanctity of the ballot and disregards the suffering of everyday Nigerians — from parents struggling to feed their families to jobless graduates and collapsing small businesses,” he said.
Abdullahi concluded by stating that in 2027, Nigerians will assess the Tinubu administration based on real performance indicators such as job creation, poverty reduction, security, electricity supply, and access to justice.
