As preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its position as the only viable political alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as lacking political relevance.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP maintained that its focus remains on unseating the APC and addressing Nigeria’s mounting national challenges rather than engaging in distractions from what it termed “marginal political parties.”
The response came after ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made remarks critical of the PDP during a recent television interview. Reacting, the PDP said it would not engage in political debates with what it called fringe opposition parties.
“As the leading opposition party in Nigeria, enjoying the loyalty and confidence of the majority of Nigerians, the PDP will not be dragged into altercations with the ADC or any other minor political group,” Ologunagba stated.
He insisted that the PDP remains the largest and most established opposition platform in the country, with nationwide reach, deep grassroots presence, and the political capacity required to challenge and dislodge the APC in 2027.
Addressing concerns over recent defections from the party, Ologunagba assured that the PDP still commands strong support from Nigerians across the country.
“Our strength lies in the people, and Nigerians remain firmly behind the PDP. We continue to maintain the political reach and organizational capacity needed to lead the country out of its current challenges,” he said.
The party also highlighted its readiness to govern again, citing a track record in public office and a pool of credible presidential hopefuls capable of competing against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.
Additionally, the PDP expressed willingness to collaborate with other patriotic groups and individuals in the quest to “rescue the nation from APC’s misrule.”
“As a party that represents the collective aspirations of Nigerians, the PDP remains open to alliances with well-meaning individuals and organizations committed to a common goal of national recovery,” the statement read.
The PDP further disclosed that arrangements are underway for its National Convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025.
Reiterating its commitment to party unity and national leadership, the PDP emphasized that it would not be distracted by what it described as “unfounded criticisms” from those aligned with the APC.
“Our focus is firmly on organizing a successful National Convention. We won’t allow our attention to be diverted by baseless attacks from known sympathizers of the APC,” Ologunagba concluded.
