Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition, urging Nigerians to rally behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to “rescue the nation.”
Addressing a large crowd of supporters at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Wednesday, Amaechi officially announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his full alignment with a growing opposition coalition.
Among the key political figures joining forces with Amaechi are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, and ex-SGF Babachir Lawal all of whom have left their former parties.
At a rally in Rivers State, Amaechi condemned the current administration, blaming Tinubu for worsening economic hardship and detachment from citizens’ suffering.
“If you’re not tired of Tinubu, I am. If you’re not hungry, I am,” Amaechi told the crowd. “The President says he doesn’t care about your happiness. But the ADC is here to make you happy.”
He called on Rivers residents and Nigerians at large to register with the ADC and prepare to vote out the APC in 2027.
“Every well-meaning Rivers person should join the ADC to end this suffering,” he said.
When asked about the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket, Amaechi said the party would support any candidate who emerges from a credible primary process.
“We want a free, fair, and transparent primary. Whoever wins, we’ll stand by them,” he assured.
Amaechi also took aim at electoral malpractice in Rivers State, stating.
“I will not work with anyone who supports rigging. Rivers is known for writing election results. That must stop.”
After his address, Amaechi was seen walking several kilometres from Waterlines to his Old GRA residence, waving to cheering residents along the route.
