Paul Ibe, spokesperson for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has confirmed that Atiku’s resignation letter from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was leaked, not officially released.
Speaking on Arise News on Wednesday night, Ibe addressed the controversy surrounding the timing of Atiku’s exit from the PDP, which coincided with national mourning for former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was buried on Tuesday.
According to Ibe, the leak was orchestrated by political opponents both within the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC), who are hostile to Atiku’s political ambitions.
“We’re here because individuals who never wished His Excellency Atiku Abubakar well leaked a private communication. Yes, it was leaked,” he said.
Ibe also criticized the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for commenting on the issue instead of focusing on pressing aviation concerns.
“It’s unfortunate that the Minister of Aviation, who should be tackling serious issues like airport infrastructure and runway safety, decided to join this political fray as if he already knew the cause of an accident before any investigation,” Ibe remarked.
He accused “rogue elements” in the PDP of working with APC allies to publicize the letter and distract from national reflection following Buhari’s death.
“Those claiming to know why he resigned are they clairvoyant? I’d rather we focus on other matters, especially while the country mourns the late President,” he added.
Atiku’s formal resignation was submitted in a letter dated July 14, 2025, to his ward chairman in Adamawa State.
The letter, later posted on social media by his media team, cited “irreconcilable differences” and expressed disappointment with the PDP’s current direction, which he said had drifted from its founding ideals.
