Former Special Assistant on Digital Communications to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has dismissed reports claiming that the 81-year-old former Nigerian leader is in critical condition and confined to an intensive care unit.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Ahmad confirmed that Buhari is currently unwell and receiving medical care, but emphasized that his condition is stable and improving.
“It is true that former President Buhari is unwell and is currently receiving medical attention,” Ahmad wrote.
“However, contrary to exaggerated media claims, he is stable and responding well to treatment. We are optimistic about his full recovery.”
Ahmad also expressed gratitude to supporters for their concern and prayers.
“We appreciate the outpouring of prayers and goodwill from supporters and well-wishers around the world. We continue to pray for his complete and speedy recovery.”
His statement comes amid widespread online reports suggesting Buhari was rushed to an ICU in London late last month. Independent media outlets reported that he spent several days under close observation before being transferred to a private room earlier this week.
So far, neither Buhari’s family nor the Presidency has disclosed the nature of his illness.
Buhari’s health has been a recurring topic of public concern since his tenure as president from 2015 to 2023. In 2017, he spent over 100 days in London for treatment of an undisclosed illness, temporarily handing over power to then-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
He also made further medical trips abroad in 2018 and 2021, sparking criticism over the lack of transparency and cost to the public.
