Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has reflected on a memorable encounter with the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose deep concern for the poor left a lasting impression.

Speaking to reporters during the Third Day Prayers held in honour of the former president, Obi recounted his conversation with Buhari during a past campaign.

“I had the opportunity to meet the late Muhammadu Buhari while I was campaigning. He said to me, ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ Those words have stayed with me,” Obi said. “I believe he did his best within the limits of his ability.”

Obi praised Buhari’s dedication to serving the underprivileged, describing him as a man of sincerity and simplicity. “His genuine concern for the poor is something we should all emulate,” he added.

Reflecting on leadership and legacy, Obi emphasized the importance of selfless service: “We must all learn to serve our country, keeping in mind that one day, we’ll return to our Creator.”

Vanguard earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu, along with other top dignitaries, received Buhari’s body at Katsina International Airport on Tuesday before proceeding to Daura for the state burial.

Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a brief illness. He was buried in his Daura hometown according to Islamic rites, amid an outpouring of grief from thousands of mourners who came to pay their last respects.
