As reactions continue to trail the leaked audio in which Osun State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, was heard making threats against the Alasi of Asi, Oba Oyewale Olasunkanmi Isaac, the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has denied reports that Egbedun has been suspended.

The controversy, which began after the Speaker accused the monarch of endangering his life and masterminding attacks on his convoy, escalated after Egbedun admitted he made the call heard in the viral audio. This prompted widespread backlash, including a public call by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for him to resign, citing unbefitting conduct for a political officeholder.

However, dispelling recent reports of disciplinary action, the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers and Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, described the suspension claim as completely false.

“There was no such suspension. No press conference was held in Ibadan or anywhere else, and no such pronouncement was made by me or any authorised representative of the Conference,” he said in a statement.

He added that Egbedun remains in good standing within the body.

“Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun remains a respected and active member of the Conference who has not been found wanting in any way.”

Ogundoyin also condemned the platform that circulated the suspension claim, describing it as irresponsible and misleading.

“This is a reminder that freedom of the press comes with responsibility. Fake news must be tackled with urgency.”

The Conference is demanding a public apology and retraction from the blog, warning of legal action if the false report is not corrected.

Meanwhile, the Zone XI Police Command in Osogbo has also denied receiving any formal petition against the Speaker over the threats alleged by the monarch.

“I am unaware of such development,” said CSP Ade Ogunyemi, the Command’s spokesperson, during a telephone conversation.

The developments suggest that, despite mounting public criticism and political pressure, the Speaker is yet to face any official sanction or investigation over the incident.
