Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticized UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch over her comments on Nigerian citizenship laws.
In a recent interview on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, Badenoch stated that she cannot pass on her Nigerian citizenship to her children because she is a woman, and claimed it is harder to obtain Nigerian citizenship than British.
“It’s virtually impossible to get Nigerian citizenship,” Badenoch said. “I have it by virtue of my parents, but I can’t give it to my children because I’m a woman… Yet many Nigerians acquire British citizenship with relative ease.”
Responding on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Shehu Sani dismissed her concerns.
“Why should Kemi Badenoch be bothered about getting Nigerian citizenship for her offspring from a country she rebuked and rejected? She should just enjoy her adopted home and leave us alone in our father’s home.”
Kemi Badenoch, born in the UK to Nigerian parents, spent part of her childhood in Lagos before returning to the UK at age 16. She is married to Scottish banker Hamish Badenoch, and they have three children.
