The Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The declaration aligns with the ongoing seven-day national mourning declared earlier by the President in remembrance of Buhari’s impactful leadership and service.
Buhari, aged 82, died in a London clinic, with the news confirmed by his former Special Adviser, Garba Shehu, via a statement issued Sunday evening.
In a statement released through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described Buhari as a “leader who served Nigeria with dedication and integrity.”
“In furtherance to the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.”
The Minister said the day is set aside to allow Nigerians reflect on the former president’s contributions to the nation’s democratic progress and development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation.”
He emphasized that the holiday is a time to “reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
Dr. Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to commemorate the day by fostering peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, in line with Buhari’s vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria.
As part of the mourning protocols, national flags are to remain at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, throughout the seven-day mourning period.
“The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the Minister concluded.
