The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed strong concern over the United States’ recent decision to implement more restrictive visa policies for Nigerian citizens, calling on Washington to review the measure in the interest of mutual respect and long-standing bilateral ties.

The US government recently amended its visa reciprocity schedule for Nigeria, significantly reducing the validity period of several non-immigrant visas including B1/B2 (business/tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) categories to just three months, with single-entry limits.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government described the revised policy as “disproportionate” and inconsistent with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect.

“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries,” the statement noted.

The government cautioned that the new restrictions could adversely affect a broad spectrum of Nigerian citizens from students and business travelers to families with relatives in the US and potentially disrupt cultural and educational exchanges that have historically strengthened bilateral relations.

“While acknowledging the sovereign right of every country to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities,” Ebienfa added.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that diplomatic engagements are ongoing and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to resolving the issue through constructive dialogue, aiming for a solution that is fair and mutually beneficial.
