A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in the Abedi Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government, Kano State, as a three-storey uncompleted building collapsed, claiming four lives and injuring seven others.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the development on Monday after conducting several hours of search and rescue operations, led by its Kano Territorial Office.
The agency’s coordinator, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, disclosed to the News Agency of Nigeria that the collapse happened at about 6:49 p.m., following a prolonged downpour.
“Upon receiving the distress alert, we immediately mobilised our Search and Rescue (SAR) response team to the scene in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders,” Abdullahi stated.
He explained that eyewitnesses said several individuals were inside the structure when it suddenly gave way, leaving many trapped under rubble.
“As of 1:56 a.m. on Monday, two persons had been confirmed dead, while six others were rescued with injuries,” he said.
However, the agency later updated its figures, confirming that four people died, while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Rescue efforts at the scene have been concluded, and relevant authorities are expected to carry out a structural assessment to ascertain the cause of the collapse and evaluate the safety of nearby buildings.
The unfortunate event has sparked renewed public concern regarding the safety of uncompleted buildings, particularly in flood-prone areas during the rainy season.
