Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi held talks focused on the recent conflict with Israel and the strengthening of Iran-China relations.

According to a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araghchi updated Wang on developments following the June ceasefire between Iran and Israel. The discussions took place on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting.

Both sides explored opportunities to expand cooperation, with China reaffirming its support for Iran’s sovereignty and opposition to “power politics and bullying,” as stated by Beijing’s Foreign Ministry.

Following the 12-day conflict with Israel, Tehran is reportedly seeking to enhance military cooperation with China. A recent report by the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War suggests Iran may be interested in acquiring Chinese fighter jets to upgrade its aging air fleet.

However, Chinese officials have denied claims that Iran is buying Chinese air defense systems.

Under long-standing international sanctions, Iran has increasingly relied on its domestic arms industry and military cooperation with Russia. Efforts to purchase Russian Su-35 fighter jets have yet to yield results.

Despite Iran’s push for deeper military ties, analysts remain skeptical about the likelihood of a full-scale strategic alliance between Tehran and Beijing.
