The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal has formally announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lawal, who served during the first term of President Muhammadu Buhari, made his decision known in a letter dated June 29, 2025, addressed to the APC chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress,” the letter read in part. “In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens. This resignation takes immediate effect.”
He concluded the letter by extending warm regards to party members, wishing them well.
Lawal’s departure is believed to be linked to ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. He is reportedly aligned with a new opposition coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu and break the APC’s hold on power.
The emerging alliance which is spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform in preparation for the next polls.
