Liverpool have made a formal approach to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, showing serious intent to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season, according to a report by transfer insider David Ornstein.

While the Reds have not yet tabled an official bid, Ornstein reports that Liverpool have indicated a willingness to negotiate around the £120 million mark. However, Newcastle are reportedly firm in their stance that the 25-year-old Swedish international is not for sale.

Liverpool’s renewed interest in Isak follows the tragic passing of forward Diogo Jota earlier this month, as the club actively searches for a top-class No. 9 to reinforce their front line. The Athletic recently confirmed that the Premier League champions have prioritized securing a prolific striker during this transfer window.

Since arriving from Real Sociedad for around £60 million, Isak has become a standout performer at St. James’ Park, scoring 62 goals in 109 appearances for Newcastle. He was instrumental in their fifth-place finish last season, netting 27 times in 42 matches, and securing Champions League qualification. The forward still has three years remaining on his current deal.

“Liverpool mean business. Their pursuit of Isak shows their ambition to build on last season’s success and dominate for years,” said Gregg Evans, a club correspondent.

The move for Isak comes shortly after Liverpool shattered their transfer record by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100 million, potentially rising to £116 million with add-ons. The club also recently turned down a €67.5 million offer from Bayern Munich for Luis Diaz.

Isak’s potential arrival may be influenced by ongoing speculation over Darwin Nunez’s future, with both Napoli and Saudi side Al Hilal showing strong interest in the Uruguayan striker.

Described by data analyst Thom Harris as “a unique centre-forward,” Isak combines height (6ft 4in), pace, and technical finesse. His slick dribbling, sharp finishing, and counter-attacking prowess make him a perfect fit for Arne Slot’s tactical setup.

If a deal is struck, Isak would join an already dangerous frontline that includes Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo, further boosting Liverpool’s firepower as they aim to defend their Premier League crown.
