The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
According to the statement, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives jointly directed the suspension of all plenary sessions and related legislative engagements until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
“This decision reflects the nation’s appreciation for the late President Buhari’s lifelong service and dedication to Nigeria,” Ogunlana stated.
The leadership of both chambers also extended heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian government and people, the government and citizens of Katsina State, and the Buhari family.
Lawmakers have been advised to adjust their individual schedules to enable their participation in the burial and memorial proceedings.
President Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
“He will be remembered for his integrity and steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s unity,” the statement concluded.
