Spain international Nico Williams has opened up about his decision to remain at Athletic Club, despite attracting significant interest from top European clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
Barcelona were reportedly ready to trigger the 22-year-old’s €58 million ($67 million) release clause this summer, having previously tried to sign him last year. However, Nico opted to extend his stay with Athletic, signing a new contract that runs until June 2035.
Speaking about his choice, the Euro 2024 winner said: “I believe we have a long and exciting season ahead, with ambitions like playing in the Champions League something every player dreams of. What could be better than achieving that with the club I love? I want to keep making history here at San Mamés, alongside our incredible fans, my family, and with great enthusiasm.”
Nico has grown into one of the most sought-after young forwards in Europe since breaking into the senior team. His loyalty to Athletic, where he started as an 11-year-old, has been praised by the club’s hierarchy.
Mikel González, Athletic’s Director of Football, expressed his delight at Nico’s decision: “He is a unique and exceptional player. Keeping talent like Nico at Athletic is truly fantastic news.”
Nico will continue playing alongside his older brother, Ghana international Iñaki Williams, who will captain the team this season.
“This is a moment we’ve always dreamed of,” Nico said. “My brother has always been a role model for me. I believe he’s the perfect choice to lead the team, and I’m excited to see him wear the armband.”
González also highlighted the club’s family values, saying: “Family is very important at Athletic. We’re thrilled to see Iñaki take on the captaincy and to have Nico continue showcasing his talent with us.”
