Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has explained why he was absent from the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, held Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State.
Obi, speaking to reporters on Wednesday after a condolence visit to Buhari’s family, cited flight unavailability and restricted airspace as the reasons for his absence.
“There were no available flights yesterday,” Obi said. “Even if there were, landing at Katsina Airport was impossible due to closures for dignitaries attending the burial.”
He emphasized that mourning extends beyond the burial day, noting that his visit still fell within the traditional period of grieving.
“Mourning continues today and tomorrow. Those who come during this time are still part of the process,” he explained.
Reflecting on his past interactions with Buhari, Obi recalled meeting him during the 2023 presidential campaign.
“He told me, ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That stuck with me. I believe he did his best, especially regarding his concern for the poor,” Obi said.
On Buhari’s passing, Obi remarked on the fleeting nature of power and life.
“We must all serve this country knowing that one day, we’ll return to our creator.”
President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday in London and was buried Tuesday in Daura with full military honours. The burial was attended by high-ranking officials, foreign dignitaries, and traditional rulers.
