The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of corps members being rejected by employers to whom they are officially posted.

This issue, according to the scheme, is undermining one of the core objectives of the national programme, offering graduates practical experience and professional development.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, raised the alarm during the 2025 Annual Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Jos, Plateau State, on Wednesday. Represented by Deputy Director Gbamisola Salami, the NYSC boss said the rising rate of rejection by employers is worrisome and counterproductive.

“Your organisations serve as platforms where corps members are expected to apply their knowledge, develop relevant skills, and gain valuable work experience. Unfortunately, the rejection of corps members by assigned employers significantly hinders the achievement of this objective,” he stated.

Brig.-Gen. Nafiu also highlighted other critical challenges affecting the scheme, including late or non-submission of requests for corps members by organisations, poor welfare conditions, and instances of inhumane treatment. He urged employers to show more commitment to the welfare and development of corps members by creating supportive and inclusive work environments.

“Employers must see themselves as partners in nation-building,” he added. “By accepting and nurturing corps members, you contribute not only to their professional growth but also to national development.”

Also speaking at the event, Plateau State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Jonathan Yavala, said the workshop was organised to foster stronger collaboration between the NYSC and corps employers, while also addressing existing communication gaps.

“You are not just supervisors; you are mentors, role models, and nation builders,” Yavala told the employers present.

Declaring the workshop open, Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Musa Ashoms, emphasized the importance of providing a conducive environment that enables corps members to thrive, make meaningful contributions, and feel valued within their host communities.

The NYSC management reiterated its commitment to working closely with employers to ensure the success of the scheme and called for a renewed sense of responsibility in handling corps members nationwide.
