A political rift has erupted in Osun State after a leaked voice note allegedly capturing Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, issuing threats and curses at the Alasi of Asi, Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale, surfaced online.
The voice note, believed to have been part of a phone conversation with the monarch’s wife, has sparked condemnation and demands for accountability from opposition parties.
In a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused Egbedun of disrespecting the traditional institution and bringing the Assembly into disrepute.
The APC called for his impeachment, urged his constituents to begin a recall process, and demanded that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, investigate and prosecute him.
“If someone like Egbedun is leading the Osun State Assembly, it’s no wonder the legislature has lost its integrity. His conduct toward Oba Oyewale is appalling and emblematic of the broader governance failures under the Adeleke administration,” the APC stated.
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), through its Osun State chairman, Dr. Tosin Odeyemi, also condemned the Speaker’s remarks, calling for an independent investigation regardless of Egbedun’s office.
However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dismissed the criticism as politically motivated. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oladele Bamiji, the PDP insisted the incident was a private dispute between Egbedun and the monarch and not the business of opposition parties.
The PDP claimed that the Speaker’s reaction was triggered by previous threats to his life, which had already been reported to the police and were under investigation.
“The APC’s statement is not only hypocritical but a calculated move to exploit a sensitive issue for cheap political gains,” the PDP said.
“We urge the police to expand their probe to include members of the opposition, as their desperation to destabilize Osun State becomes more evident.”
The party also appealed to Oba Oyewale for calm and encouraged a peaceful resolution, highlighting the historically cordial relationship between the monarch and the Speaker.
“We trust in Speaker Egbedun’s leadership and his commitment to serving the people of Osun with integrity,” the PDP concluded.
