Amid heavy rainfall, a group of retired police officers staged a peaceful protest on Monday at the entrance gate of the National Assembly in Abuja, demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
The elderly ex-police personnel, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, braved the downpour to draw attention to what they described as years of neglect and unfair treatment under the pension scheme.
Speaking during the protest, retired Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Manir Lawal, called on the government to withdraw police retirees from the CPS, describing it as both exploitative and unjust.

“We are here to ask the government to remove us from the CPS. The pension scheme is exploitative and unjust.
“I am 67 years old. Many of us here are in our 60s and 70s. We have served this country faithfully and deserve to retire in dignity. This scheme has impoverished us. It is our right to demand better,” he said.
Despite the unfavourable weather, the protesters remained resolute, insisting that their concerns must be addressed by the leadership of the National Assembly.
Security operatives were stationed at the protest site to monitor the situation and ensure order was maintained.
