Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on newly elected local government chairmen and vice-chairmen to prioritize grassroots development in their respective councils.

Speaking on Sunday during their swearing-in ceremony at the Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor emphasized the need for effective service delivery at the local level, describing local government as the “tier of government closest to the people.”

The newly inaugurated officials emerged from the July 12, 2025 local government elections held across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.

“Now is the time to work. Don’t let politics distract you. This is not a time for vendetta or pettiness,” Sanwo-Olu said. “I expect you to work collaboratively with everyone in your council and community.”

He urged the new officials to focus on areas such as road rehabilitation, education, water supply, youth empowerment, and community development, noting that these actions would define their legacy.

“Every road you fix, every child you help stay in school, every borehole you commission, every youth you empower—all these are parts of your legacy,” the governor added. “Lagos is counting on you to deliver real, tangible development in every street, ward, and community.”

Sanwo-Olu highlighted citizens’ expectations for better roads, safer streets, functional healthcare, thriving primary schools, affordable markets, and cleaner environments.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Bolaji Robert, congratulated the chairmen, praising their emergence as a reflection of public trust and electoral credibility.

“Your victories reflect the people’s confidence in you,” Robert said. “Today’s swearing-in is the culmination of a peaceful, transparent, and credible election process.”

He commended the governor for fostering democratic values at the grassroots and acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for laying the foundation for democratic growth in the state and the country.
