Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has dismissed calls for scrapping Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution in favor of drafting a new one. Instead, he advocates for targeted amendments to improve the existing framework.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television program, Nwoko described the constitution as a “working document” that continues to guide Nigeria’s governance.
“Personally, I do not subscribe to the idea of discarding the current constitution. It’s a workable document, and it has been guiding what we are doing in Nigeria so far,” he stated.
While acknowledging that the constitution isn’t flawless, Nwoko stressed that perfection is unattainable in any country’s legal system.
“There cannot be any perfect constitution anywhere in the world. All you can do is propose amendments to reflect the people’s wishes,” he added.
His comments come amid growing calls from civil society groups and political leaders pushing for a new constitution to tackle structural and governance issues across the country.
