Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of misleading Nigerians by distorting economic data to conceal the country’s worsening economic situation.
In a statement shared Monday via X (formerly Twitter), Obi criticized the Tinubu administration for relying on inaccurate statistics to present a false narrative of progress.
He referenced a 2022 campaign comment by Tinubu in Delta State, where the then-APC presidential candidate reportedly mocked Obi’s reliance on data.
“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu now the President dismissed the use of data, asking rhetorically, ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians,’” Obi recalled.
“Now, two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria ranks among the hungriest nations globally, with millions unsure of where their next meal will come from,” he added.
Obi claimed the government is now “overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics,” citing misleading figures on unemployment, inflation, and a recent GDP recalibration. “All of this is aimed at masking the deteriorating economic and household realities,” he said.
Reaffirming his views on effective governance, Obi stated, “Governance is not rocket science or a gamble. It requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
