President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, describing him as a patriotic leader and committed statesman who stood firm during Nigeria’s most challenging periods.

In honour of the late leader, President Tinubu has convened an emergency meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) scheduled for Tuesday, which will be dedicated to the memory and legacy of the former President.

In a heartfelt tribute personally signed by him, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s passing, which occurred at a hospital in the United Kingdom. He also announced that the Federal Government will accord the late President full state honours in recognition of his immense contributions to the nation.

The tribute reads in part: “It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, my predecessor, who departed this life today, Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom.

“President Buhari was, to the core, a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures. He served our nation with unwavering dedication, first as a military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

“He led with quiet strength, deep integrity, and an unshakeable belief in Nigeria’s future. Through some of the nation’s most turbulent times, he remained steadfast, confronting corruption, instilling discipline in public service, and prioritising national interest above all else.”

President Tinubu extended his condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children, the Buhari family, as well as the government and people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate.

“We honour his service, reflect on his legacy, and pray for the peaceful repose of his soul. As a mark of respect, I have directed that all national flags across the country be flown at half-staff for seven days, starting today,” Tinubu stated.

He further announced: “I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday in his honour. The Federal Government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. May his life of service continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
