President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that a full state burial be accorded to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025. As part of the preparations, Tinubu has appointed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, to lead an Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with organising a befitting funeral for the late statesman.

A statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, outlined the composition of the committee. Members include several key ministers: those of Finance and Economic Planning; Defence; Information and National Orientation; Works; Interior; the Federal Capital Territory; Housing and Urban Development; Arts, Culture and Creative Economy; and the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare.

Also serving on the committee are the National Security Adviser, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Matters, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Chief of Defence Staff.

The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), will function as the Secretariat to the Committee.

As part of the national mourning protocols, President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrances of their offices, allowing members of the public to pay their respects.

In addition, central condolence registers will be made available at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja for members of the diplomatic corps and the general public.

In a related development, the SGF announced the postponement of the planned meeting with Secretaries to State Governments (SSGs), originally scheduled for July 15 and 16 in Jos, Plateau State.

“This decision has been taken to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, and to observe the state burial and national mourning period declared by the Federal Government,” the statement noted.

A new date for the meeting will be communicated in due course.
