President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to travel from Abuja to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Sunday, where he will attend the eighth-day Islamic prayer in honour of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The revered monarch passed away on July 13 at the age of 91 and was laid to rest the following day in a private ceremony conducted according to Islamic customs. His death marked the end of an extraordinary 65-year reign, which is one of the longest in Nigeria’s history, it is defined by unwavering service, bold advocacy, and a deep commitment to progress.

The prayer session, which will hold at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, is expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond. Among the attendees will be Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, traditional rulers, prominent politicians, business leaders, and Islamic clerics.

Security has been significantly beefed up around the town in anticipation of the high-profile event. Key areas such as the Dipo Dina Stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and his private Igbeba residence are now under close surveillance. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Amotekun Corps are stationed at strategic points to maintain order and ensure smooth coordination.

In preparation for the event, major markets in Ijebu-Ode including Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje will be shut down on Sunday as a mark of respect to the late monarch. Traders and residents are expected to participate in the solemn prayer, paying their last respects to a ruler they describe as a beacon of development and progress.

Oba Adetona’s legacy looms large over Ijebuland and Nigeria at large. Known for his outspokenness, progressive ideals, and dedication to education and good governance, he was a respected voice in national affairs for decades. At his 90th birthday celebration and 64th coronation anniversary, President Tinubu had honoured him with Nigeria’s second-highest national award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation.

The relationship between Tinubu and the Awujale was deeply personal. As part of his presidential journey, Tinubu commenced consultations with the monarch, and after winning the 2023 election, he returned to the palace to express his appreciation—fulfilling a vow made during his campaign.

Speaking on the significance of the prayer, a local cab driver, Yusuf Balogun, remarked: “Our baba brought development and dignity to Ijebuland. We pray Allah forgives his sins and grants him Al-jannah Firdaus. The President’s visit is a great honour to us. It shows how much our Oba meant to Nigeria.”

Similarly, Damilola Ogunsanwo, a petty trader near the stadium, noted the economic ripple effect the prayer ceremony has already generated. “People have started arriving. We’ve seen more customers buying food, water, and even fabrics. Hotels are filling up fast—it’s a blessing in the midst of mourning.”

Local hoteliers also confirmed a sharp increase in bookings, with some reporting full occupancy ahead of the event. The prayer is expected to attract thousands of mourners and well-wishers, making it one of the most significant gatherings in Ijebu-Ode’s recent history.

As Nigeria continues to mourn the passing of a monarch celebrated for integrity, wisdom, and developmental strides, Sunday’s prayer will serve as a moment of national reflection—an opportunity to celebrate a life of impactful leadership and to honour a king whose reign shaped generations.
