The British High Commission in Abuja has announced a significant update to the UK’s visa process for Nigerians applying for study and work visas. Starting 15 July 2025, most applicants in these categories will begin receiving digital eVisas instead of the traditional visa stickers placed in passports.

According to a statement from the commission, the new system will only apply to applications submitted on or after 15 July 2025. Those who apply before that date will still follow the existing process, which includes submitting their passport at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) and receiving a physical visa sticker known as a vignette.

“From 15 July 2025, most applicants for UK study or work visas will no longer be issued physical vignettes in their passports. Instead, successful applicants will be granted an eVisa a secure, digital record of their immigration status,” the statement said.

The move is part of the UK government’s broader plan to build a fully digital immigration system, aimed at making visa processing more secure, efficient, and user-friendly.

Despite the shift to digital visas, biometric enrolment at a Visa Application Centre will still be required. After approval, applicants will receive an email from UK Visas and Immigration with the outcome and instructions on creating a UKVI account, where they can access their eVisa.

Gill Atkinson, the Chargé d’Affaires at the British High Commission, emphasized the benefits of the change, saying, “We are simplifying the process for Nigerians traveling to the UK. The move to eVisas will make the system more convenient and secure.”

However, she clarified that the change will not immediately affect everyone. For example, dependants (like spouses and children) of those applying for study or work visas, as well as visitor visa applicants, will continue receiving visa vignette stickers in their passports for now.

The High Commission also noted that eVisas have already replaced Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) for those granted stay in the UK for more than six months. eVisa holders can use the “View and Prove”gov.uk online service to share their immigration status with employers, landlords, and other third parties.

To obtain an eVisa, applicants must; Apply online via the official UK government website (gov.uk); Attend a Visa Application Centre to submit biometrics; Take their passport home the same day if a vignette is not required; Follow the decision letter instructions, including creating and linking a UKVI account if necessary.
