The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos are closed today, Tuesday, July 15, in observance of Nigeria’s national public holiday declared to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The US Mission in Nigeria announced the closure via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, July 14, stating that the move is in solidarity with Nigeria’s national day of mourning.

“All visa appointments scheduled for July 15 will be rescheduled,” the statement said, assuring affected applicants that new appointment dates will be communicated soon.

Consular operations are expected to resume following the holiday.

President Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London hospital. The Nigerian government has since declared Tuesday a work-free day in tribute to the former leader.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier led the country as military head of state from 1983 to 1985.

He was widely recognized for his anti-corruption campaign and efforts to bolster national security.
