The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a warning to Green Card holders, stating that individuals with criminal histories may have their lawful permanent resident status revoked and face deportation.
In a notice released on Tuesday, the agency reminded Green Card holders of its core mission to protect the American people, secure the nation’s borders, and support economic stability.
“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal record does not make you a model lawful permanent resident,” the CBP said.
The agency emphasized that permanent residency is a privilege—not a guaranteed right—and that the U.S. government has the legal authority to revoke Green Cards from individuals who violate the law.
CBP also noted that Green Card holders with past criminal convictions could be detained upon arriving at a U.S. port of entry and may face removal proceedings.
“Breaking or abusing our nation’s laws can result in mandatory detention and the loss of your immigration status,” the statement added.
