The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticized Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for serving food at a recent event, describing the act as a political stunt aimed at misleading Nigerians.

Speaking on Tuesday during the inauguration of the New Edo Line Transport Service in Benin City, Edo State, Wike labeled the gesture as “shameful,” insisting that such behavior is not befitting of a former presidential candidate.

“This is not where a presidential candidate should be serving food. How long will he keep doing that? Is that what a president does serve food to guests?” Wike questioned. “And people think that shows humility. That’s deception.”

Wike also dismissed claims that Obi’s use of commercial flights shows modesty, suggesting it is unrealistic given security protocols for high-profile politicians.

“As a presidential candidate, do you really believe security agents will let you fly commercial? Nigerians like to be played,” he said.

The former Rivers State Governor backed Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who had earlier criticized Obi’s conduct and demanded that political figures inform the state government ahead of visits for security reasons.

Okpebholo had cautioned Obi during a political rally in Benin City last Friday, claiming that Obi’s previous visit which included a donation of N15 million to a nursing school had triggered unrest, leading to the deaths of at least four people.

“If Peter Obi wants to visit, he must seek proper security clearance. If anything happens, he’ll be responsible. This is no joke,” Okpebholo warned.

Wike supported the governor’s stance, saying it was a necessary precaution to ensure public safety.

“He didn’t say Obi shouldn’t come. He just asked for advance notice, which is reasonable. But some people twist these things on TV after being paid,” Wike added.
