The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, against initiating a probe into the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
Governor Okpebholo had announced plans to establish a commission of inquiry into Obaseki’s tenure during a victory parade at the Government House in Benin City on Friday.
Speaking on Sunday evening in Benin City, Wike advised the governor to prioritize state development rather than getting entangled in political investigations.
“If there’s anyone who should be pushing for Obaseki’s probe, it’s me,” Wike said in a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka. “But I’ve moved past what he did to me. Focus on governance, not revenge.”
Wike acknowledged being wronged by Obaseki, particularly during the 2020 election when he supported Obaseki’s re-election bid. Despite past grievances, Wike emphasized that leadership requires maturity.
“When God elevates you, leave vengeance to Him. Obaseki is no longer in power—channel your energy into building Edo,” he urged.
Wike also extended a public apology to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former Edo governor and APC leader, for previously contributing to actions he described as humiliating.
“I apologize to you, leader. I was part of the humiliation you faced. But let’s move on and let Edo progress,” Wike said.
Wike had traveled to Benin to commission the second phase of the Benin Central Bus Terminal, but the event was canceled following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
