Veteran Nollywood actor Yemi Solade has issued a public apology to fellow actor and filmmaker Afeez Owo Abiodun over an incident that occurred more than two decades ago during a film shoot.
Speaking in a recent interview on Behind the Fame African A-List, Solade recalled slapping Afeez while on set in a town near Ibadan, Oyo State. He explained that the altercation happened after the crew had wrapped up filming and the area was plunged into darkness due to a power outage. At the time, Afeez was serving as the production manager.
Solade admitted that his frustration with the situation boiled over when he felt that Afeez was not taking his concerns seriously.
“Let me publicly apologise to Afeez Abiodun. I slapped him once. He was the production manager on a film, I can’t even recall the year. After shooting in a town outside Ibadan, there was a blackout. I reported the issue, but he didn’t respond the way I expected. Out of frustration, the slap just came in the dark. I felt terrible about it. He left the set the next morning, and I didn’t see him again,” Solade recounted.
The actor expressed sincere regret for his actions, acknowledging that the reaction was uncalled for and that the apology was long overdue.
“It’s been about 20 years. I’ve mentioned it to others before, but I want to speak directly to Afeez now, I’m sorry. Mabinu simi,” he said.
Solade also reflected on his temperament, admitting that he has struggled with handling provocation and that his intolerance for perceived disrespect may have played a role in the incident.
“I don’t take insults lightly, and that’s a weakness I’m still working on,” he added.
