The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that its decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South was not taken to glorify the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, but to strengthen the party and ensure stability ahead of the next general elections.
Speaking on The Morning Show on Arise Television on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, dismissed speculations linking the zoning arrangement to Wike or any single individual.
“The party was never in the ICU, as some have suggested. Do we have challenges? Yes, just like every human organisation. But what has emerged is the fact that the PDP has the capacity, in difficult times, to step back, reorganise itself, and take charge of its internal affairs,” Ologunagba said, responding to remarks by former Benue State Governor, Senator Gabriel Suswam, who recently suggested the PDP was in crisis.
Ologunagba stressed that the decision to zone the presidency to the South was part of wider internal reforms after the 2023 elections, adding that it reflected the party’s commitment to unity, inclusiveness, and balance.
On suggestions that the move vindicated Wike and his allies who had earlier championed zoning in 2022, Ologunagba said: “No individual is vindicated. If anything, it is the PDP that has been vindicated. After the 2023 elections, we reviewed our processes, identified the gaps, and made the necessary adjustments. That is why Nigerians are now seeing renewed unity and excitement within the PDP.”
The PDP spokesman assured members and supporters that the party is fully recalibrated and better positioned to reclaim power in 2027.
