Obasanjo and Tinubu

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lashed out at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his recent remarks describing President Bola Tinubu as “competing with Buhari in incompetence.” The party dismissed the comment as “laughable” and “disgracefully hypocritical.”

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, the Lagos APC said it was ironic for Obasanjo whose administration it accused of political arrogance, wasted opportunities and undermining democracy to question anyone’s competence.

“Let us remind Nigerians that during Obasanjo’s tenure, billions allocated to the power sector disappeared without results. He left the economy saddled with more foreign debt despite claims of repayment. His third-term bid almost pushed the country into a constitutional crisis, while corruption thrived under his so-called reforms,” Oladejo stated.

The party further argued that Nigeria’s current challenges did not begin with former President Muhammadu Buhari nor are they being worsened by Tinubu, but rather stem from structural failures that date back to Obasanjo’s era.

Defending Tinubu’s policies, APC stressed that his administration has made bold and necessary choices, including the removal of fuel subsidies, restructuring of the foreign exchange system, and tackling inefficiencies that past leaders allegedly ignored.

According to the statement, Obasanjo’s criticisms are rooted in bitterness and a desire to remain politically relevant. “He cannot dictate to this government, and his routine attacks on sitting presidents after leaving office have become predictable and pathetic,” the party declared.

The Lagos APC urged the former president to exercise restraint and act with decorum befitting his status as an elder statesman. “If he has nothing constructive to contribute, silence would serve him and the nation better than attention-seeking outbursts,” the party added.

The statement concluded that President Tinubu is not in competition with Obasanjo or any other past leader, but is committed to driving reforms, recovery, and national renewal, regardless of distractions.
