The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the death of Samuel Akawa, a 20-year-old recent graduate of Information Technology from Babcock University, Ilishan Remo.
According to information gathered, Akawa was found unresponsive by his hostel roommates on Wednesday and was immediately taken to the university’s teaching hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident when contacted on Saturday. She said, “The incident happened. It was reported to the Ilishan Police Station.”
Further details emerged from the institution’s spokesperson, Joshua Sulaimon, who disclosed that the late student had expressed feeling unwell a day before his death.
“He complained to his roommate on July 29 that he was not feeling fine. It was in the evening, according to them. And his roommate advised him to go to the hospital for medical attention, but he said there was no need to go, as he would be leaving for home the next day, on July 30, and that he would receive medical attention from their family doctor,” he explained.
“The following day, they all woke up and noticed that he had not got up, and they called the attention of the hostel officer, who took him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he did not respond to medical attention.“
In a related account, security expert Zagazola Makama shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Friday that Akawa and his peers were on campus to complete their final clearance ahead of graduation.
He added that the deceased was in high spirits the night before his passing and had played games on his laptop until around 11:00 p.m.
The university has since deposited Akawa’s body at its morgue for autopsy and preservation, while investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of death.
This incident comes months after a similar tragedy at Lagos State University of Science and Technology, where a 100-level Mathematics student, Emmanuel Nweke, reportedly fell to his death from a building in the Ikorodu area after a power outage.
Grieving students had told PUNCH Metro that Nweke had stepped out to get fresh air but accidentally leaned on a weak balcony railing, lost balance, and fell—sustaining fatal head injuries before dying en route to the hospital.
