Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is facing an early defensive crisis ahead of Sunday’s London derby against Crystal Palace, with star defender Tosin Adarabioyo sidelined through injury.
According to The Times, Adarabioyo will miss the Premier League opener after sustaining what has been described as a “minor issue” in training. While the setback is not considered serious, Chelsea are unwilling to take any chances with the 27-year-old and have opted to rest him as a precaution.
His absence compounds the Blues’ defensive woes, with academy graduate Levi Colwill already ruled out long-term following knee surgery. Colwill is not expected back until 2026, leaving Maresca short of natural options at centre-back. Benoît Badiashile is also working his way back to full fitness after a knock, further limiting selection choices.
Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Maresca confirmed that Trevoh Chalobah is fit and available, while Wesley Fofana could also return, depending on late assessments. Chalobah is now in line to start, marking a dramatic turnaround after being considered surplus to requirements just a year ago.
Reece James, who has previously been deployed in central defence, and highly rated teenager Josh Acheampong with new signing Jorrel Hato remain alternative options if required.
Maresca has already expressed a strong desire to strengthen his defensive ranks, but Chelsea have yet to bring in another centre-back this summer.
