The Premier League has announced that all top-flight matches this weekend will observe a minute’s silence in honour of late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who both died in a car accident in Spain on July 3.

In consultation with Liverpool FC, the league has outlined plans for the tribute, which will include players across all clubs wearing black armbands, a moment of silence before kick-off, and commemorative messages and images displayed on stadium screens.

Tributes have already been paid to the brothers during last Sunday’s Community Shield clash between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley, where wreaths were laid and fans from both sides applauded as the siblings’ images appeared on the big screens. Liverpool supporters also unfurled a white banner with Jota’s image and number 20, accompanied by a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot addressed the brief disruption to the silence by a small section of fans, stressing it was likely unintentional and that Crystal Palace supporters, along with fans worldwide, have shown deep respect for the late players.

As part of its own tributes, Liverpool has retired Jota’s number 20 shirt. The club also plans further commemorations at Anfield in the coming weeks.
