Former Oyo State Governor and Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has appealed to compound heads and community leaders in Ibadan not to neglect their ancestral homes but instead invest in making them more habitable.
Ladoja gave the charge on Sunday while receiving hundreds of Ibadan Mogajis at his Ondo Street residence in Bodija, where they gathered to congratulate him on his emergence as the next Olubadan.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, the monarch-in-waiting expressed concern that many Mogajis, despite being financially capable, had abandoned their family compounds in favour of more affluent neighbourhoods.
“Many now reside in areas such as Bodija, Oluyole, Iyaganku, Jericho, Akobo, or even abroad, where life is more comfortable. Some have not convened family meetings for years to discuss developmental projects since assuming their titles,” Ladoja said.
He stressed that the title of Mogaji or chief in Ibadan carried responsibilities beyond prestige. “A Mogaji or Chief in Ibadan is not just a title but a duty. Mogajis and chiefs must not abandon their ancestral homes. By being present, you inspire younger generations, mentor them, and encourage development at the grassroots,” he stated.
According to him, renovating family houses and spending time in them would not only preserve heritage but also help curb social vices such as drug abuse. He cited his own example, noting that he had renovated his family house at Isale Osi, which he intends to visit regularly after his coronation.
Earlier, the leader of the Ibadan Mogajis, Chief Asimiyu Ariori, congratulated Ladoja on his emergence as Olubadan, praising his foresight and leadership. He assured the incoming monarch of the Mogajis’ full support, praying for a long and successful reign.
