The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained two senior officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) over alleged fraud linked to preparations for the 2025 Hajj.
According to EFCC sources, the officials remain in custody as investigations continue into the misappropriation of funds. “We asked them to return the money, but they haven’t. That’s why they’re still with us,” a source revealed.
In response, NAHCON, through its Assistant Director of Information and Publication, Fatima Usara, reiterated its commitment to transparency and cooperation with authorities. While not confirming the arrests, the agency stated it would not protect any staff found culpable.
“The commission will not shield any staff or process found wanting,” the statement said, urging the public and media to avoid speculation and allow due process to take its course. “We are confident the truth will emerge through proper channels,” it added.
Attempts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for comment were unsuccessful.
This development follows the EFCC’s 2024 investigation into former NAHCON Chairman, Jalal Arabi, over the alleged diversion of N90 billion in Hajj subsidies. Arabi was dismissed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024 and replaced by Prof. Abdullahi Usman.
